Why Math Competitions Matter for College Admissions (And How to Get Started This Fall)

As parents, we all want to give our children every advantage when it comes to academic achievement and college admissions. Today, we are breaking down the competition landscape—starting with the gold standard of high school math competitions: the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC).

The Gold Standard: AMC 10 & AMC 12

For high school students, the AMC 10 and AMC 12 are the most recognized math competitions in the United States. Hosted by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), these exams test analytical thinking, logic, and speed—skills that go far beyond standard school curricula.  

Why top colleges value AMC scores:

• Selective Admissions Signal: Universities like MIT, Caltech, Carnegie Mellon, and Brown explicitly ask for AMC and AIME scores on their application portals.

• Distinction Beyond GPA: A high GPA shows diligence, but strong AMC performance demonstrates exceptional analytical problem-solving and intellectual drive.

• Gateway to Elite Recognition: High scorers on the AMC 10/12 qualify for the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination), placing them in the top tier of math students nationwide.  

2026–2027 AMC Competition Schedule & Registration

Because many public and private high schools do not host these exams, finding an officially authorized test center can be a challenge. Veritas Education is proud to again serve as an official host site for this year's AMC exams. Spaces are limited, and registration is now open.

Pro Tip for High Schoolers: Students can take both an "A" version and a "B" version of the test (e.g., AMC 10A and AMC 10B) to maximize their chances of qualifying for the AIME.  

Building the Pipeline: AMC 8 and Math Kangaroo

While most college admissions preparation happens in high school, math competition success is built on a foundation laid early.

• AMC 8 (January 2027): Designed for middle schoolers (grades 6–8). It serves as the ideal, low-stakes stepping stone to get younger students comfortable with contest-style problem-solving before high school.  

• Math Kangaroo (Coming March 2027): Perfect for elementary and early middle school students. Math Kangaroo focuses on fun, visual, and logic-based puzzles rather than heavy calculation. Veritas Education will also host Math Kangaroo this coming March—stay tuned for winter registration announcements!
