Service Description

Gaining admission to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) requires far more than strong math scores and high grades. In FCPS’s holistic evaluation, the Student Portrait Sheet (SPS) and Problem-Solving Essay (PSE) determine which qualified applicants stand out and earn their seats. Since 2015, our specialized test prep has helped hundreds of students master the exact analytical and written communication skills needed to excel on the TJ admissions test. Why Focus on Writing & Problem Solving? Many top-tier STEM students struggle not with understanding math concepts, but with translating complex technical reasoning into clear, structured prose under timed pressure. Evaluators look for how students think, analyze multi-step problems, and articulate their personal leadership and growth. Our curriculum directly targets these two core assessment areas: Part 1: The Writing Component (Student Portrait Sheet - 9 Sessions) The area where most students struggle. We teach students how to showcase FCPS Portrait of a Graduate attributes (critical thinking, resilience, collaboration, and ethical leadership) through concrete, compelling personal examples. Students learn exact frameworks to structure their short essays for maximum clarity, tone, and impact. Part 2: The Problem-Solving Component (6 Sessions) We train students to deconstruct complex, multi-variable math and science scenarios. Students practice developing organized, step-by-step written explanations of their solution process, ensuring they show full logical rigor, even under strict time limits. Proven Track Record: Teaching TJ Prep since 2015 with a deep understanding of FCPS scoring criteria Expert Instructors: Taught exclusively by senior instructors specializing in STEM writing, analytical reasoning, and high-stakes test preparation Feedback & Practice: In-depth individualized essay feedback, timed practice prompts, and step-by-step solution modeling This class is essential for Grade 8 students aiming for the January 9th test and for Grade 7 students seeking to gain a head start, identify gaps in their current STEM activities, and enhance their TJ writing and problem-solving skills. Class Schedule: Problem Solving: 10/20 to 11/24: Tuesdays from 6-8 PM Writing-Student Portrait Sheet: 11/5 to 12/17: Thursdays from 6-8 PM + 12/1 to 12/15: Tuesdays from 6-8 PM. * No class on 11/26.
